Chapter Twelve
The Galinda sailed into Fort William Harbor through a heavy fog. Standing beside Ridley at the bow of the ship, Lainie felt an abrupt shift in temperature. Like a veil being parted, the morning mists lifted to display a breathtakingly clear azure sky. In a flash, gray waters turned to sparkling blue. Beyond the emerald green hills surrounding the sapphire-colored bay stood snowcapped Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in all of Great Britain.
Lainie’s hand splayed over her heart as if doing so might quell the excitement pounding in her chest. She shot Ridley a glance. “What do ye say to all this? Mother Nature couldna have timed her magic better had she sent us a schedule.”
“Good Lord, Lainie. I’ve never seen such haunting beauty. It’s like something out of a fairy tale. No wonder you love the Highlands. Is it me, or does the air seem more rarified this far north?”
“Aye. And we’ve a bit of luck with the good weather. The month of May can have a verra bad habit of dusting our mornings with snow, only to spit on us the rest of the day with rain so cold it could freeze a frog’s croak.”
He grinned at her, flashing a set of white, even teeth. “When we land, I think it best if you remain in your cabin while I visit the Fort William commander. I need to see about securing transportation to take you home.”
Home!
Oh, how she missed her family. Soon, they would be together again. Tears blurred her vision. She blinked and wiped at a corner of one eye with her gloved hand. “I willnae lie to ye, husband. I’m a bit frightened not knowing what lies ahead for me.”
“I can tell you’re concerned—your brogue just got more pronounced.” He reached over and gave her hand a squeeze. “Relax, you’re safe with me.”
“Ye dinnae ken what a Highlander is capable of if their mind is set on something. Those MacDougall boys will do anything fer a father who is set on seeing me hang.”
“And you don’t know a Malvern when we set our minds to anything. I told you, I won’t let anyone harm you.”
They fell silent as the sleek vessel made its way toward shore. She did feel safe with him. Even after the wedding when she’d stomped out of the wee kirk hurling insults at him, she sensed he wouldn’t hurt her, despite the embarrassment she’d caused him. And when he’d ordered her chamber door chopped down, she instinctively knew he would cause her no personal injury. Good heavens, both events seemed more a nightmare from long ago than reality. And what of the dogs? With a start, she realized she missed Traitor and Turncoat.
“It’s time, Lainie. We’ve drawn close enough to shore that soon, anyone with a spyglass could make out the passengers.”
She merely nodded and allowed him to escort her to her quarters. “The ship’s captain will watch over you while I’m gone. Bolt the door behind me, and have patience. Locating transportation without alerting the wrong people may take some time.
